New Building Codes Put Stress On Accessibility

Abu Dhabi, Matt Kwong:

All new buildings will have to be designed to be accessible to people with disabilities from next year under guidelines being adopted by the Department of Municipal Affairs.

The International Building Codes (IBC) require buildings to have wider entrances, ramps with a shallow gradient and adequate parking for disabled drivers.

Jerry Flanik, an American accessibility expert who detailed the guidelines to the DMA last week, said: “This is going to make the whole city more marketable. If you incorporate the accessibility standards of the IBC, Abu Dhabi will of course be a more welcome place to people wanting to visit even if they have mobility issues, even older people.”

People suffering from disabilities and those working for disabled rights in the capital said they hoped the changes would finally make buildings more accessible.

Among them was Thomas Pape, the senior technical adviser on special needs to the Zayed Higher Organization for Humanitarian Care. “How do [disabled people] manage to come through the town?” he said. “How do they reach any kind of office of administration or get a driver’s license?

“It’s very clear here in Abu Dhabi at the moment, that most of those things, they cannot do without assistance. This is a fact.”
